1985～1990年在美国加州大学UCSD 分子遗传学中心工作期间， 利用 DNA重组技术从海洋无脊椎动物动物体内首次克隆到人类重要功能蛋白的原始基因，在该蛋白质的进化上有新的发现(PNAS，USA 1990)。 回国后，于 1991年在厦门 创建了我国第一个海洋生物基因工程实验室，在世界上率先完成了困扰对虾养殖业多年的病原──对虾白斑杆状病毒基因组全部密码的破译和分析工作，使我国对虾病毒分子水平的研 究取得重大突破， 这项研究成果的消息被评选为“中国 1999年十大基础研究新闻”和“中国2000年十大科技进展新闻”。 近年来，在无脊椎动物天然免疫分子基础的研究中，从抗病对虾中首先克隆到具有抗病毒作用的因子 (Febs letter 2003)；主编了《海洋生物基因工程实验指南》和《DNA 重组技术》等书籍；引领科研团队开创了我国深海生物基因资源研究开发的新领域。
曾获得国家及省部级以上的奖励有： 1992年获享受国务院政府特殊津贴专家称号、1997年和1999年获国家优秀科技工作者称号并获人事部一等功表彰、2001年被评为全国“十行百佳”妇女同时被授予全国“三八”红旗手称号、2004年获国家海洋局先进工作者称号。1994年获中科院自然科学二等奖；自1998年以来，多次获得国家海洋局海洋科技创新成果一等奖 （排名第一） 和二等奖 （排名第二或排名第三） 。
